During last night’s first U.S. Senate debate in Iowa, anti-choice incumbent Senator Joni Ernst demonstrated just how out-of-touch she is with the majority of Iowans, attacking NARAL-endorsed Democratic nominee Theresa Greenfield for her support of reproductive freedom. A large majority (70%) of Iowa voters agree with Greenfield, and believe that abortion should be legal, and that the government should not prevent a woman from making that decision for herself.

Senator Ernst went on to call allies of Greenfield “abortion extremists.” But what Senator Ernst hopes voters forget, particularly as she prepares to ram through a radically anti-choice Supreme Court nominee despite the fact that Americans are already casting their ballots, is that 77% of Americans support Roe v. Wade and the right to legal abortion. By Ernst’s own logic, the vast majority of Americans are “extremists.” Supporting reproductive freedom doesn’t just put Greenfield in good company—it is a winning issue and a path to victory in elections. Just 14% of Iowa voters say they would only consider voting for a candidate who supports banning abortion in the November election.

Greenfield proudly supports reproductive freedom, and knows that politicians have no place interfering in personal decisions about pregnancy. On the other hand, Senator Ernst earned an ‘A’ from the anti-freedom, anti-choice organization Susan B. Anthony List, and has been touting it. Why does Sen. Ernst continue to ignore the views of a majority of her own constituents?

NARAL Pro-Choice America is proud to endorse Greenfield to unseat Sen. Ernst, who has been a rubber-stamp for Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell’s harmful agenda and confirmed dozens of anti-choice judicial nominees while spouting inflammatory rhetoric about abortion. This race is crucial to flipping the U.S. Senate and protecting and expanding reproductive freedom, and Greenfield will add a crucial voice to the Senate to ensure reproductive freedom is for every body.
