Twenty Iowa Candidates Earn Endorsement from Nation’s Leading Pro-Choice Advocacy Group

Iowa NARAL Pro-Choice Iowa today announced its endorsement of 20 legislative candidates ahead of the November 3rd general election: 11 in the Senate and nine in the House.

The slate includes 13 candidates seeking to flip seats currently held by anti-choice, anti-freedom Republicans, part of NARAL’s ongoing efforts to secure a majority in Iowa’s General Assembly that supports reproductive freedom.

“NARAL and our more than 27,000 members across Iowa are proud to support these 20 candidates, whose leadership will be critical to fighting back against Republican-led assaults on reproductive freedom,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “As thousands of Iowans were struggling in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Republicans in the statehouse chose to devote the final hours of this year’s legislative session to blocking access to abortion care. We refuse to give them yet another opportunity to prioritize an extreme ideological agenda over the needs of Iowans. It’s past time we replace out-of-touch anti-choice, anti-freedom lawmakers with leaders who will be true champions for reproductive freedom.”

In addition to being home to a key U.S. Senate race — as NARAL-endorsed candidate Theresa Greenfield seeks to unseat anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican Senator Joni Ernst — Iowa is an emerging battleground state on the verge of flipping at least one legislative chamber in 2020.

Endorsed Senate Candidates:

  • Steve Gorman (SD-08)
  • Rhonda Martin (SD-20)
  • Sarah Trone Garriott (SD-22)
  • Cynthia Oppedal Paschen (SD-24)

  • Dave Degner (SD-36)
  • Ivy Schuster (SD-38)
  • Sen. Rich Taylor (SD-42)

  • Rep. Scott Ourth (HD-26)
  • Andrea Phillips (HD-37)
  • Rep. Dave Williams (HD-60)
  • Carissa Froyum (HD-63)
  • Eric Gjerde (HD-67)
  • Lonny Pulkrabek (HD-73)
  • Rep. Mary Gaskill (HD-81)
  • Phil Miller (HD-82)
  • Christian Andrews (HD-95)

NARAL also endorsed a slate of 10 candidates in July, including: State Representatives Karin Derry (HD-39), Heather Matson (HD-38), Kristin Sunde (HD-43), Beth Wessel-Kroeschell (HD-45), Liz Bennett (HD-65), Molly Donahue (HD-68), Lindsay James (HD-99), Assistant House Minority Leader Jennifer Konfrst (HD-42), House Minority Leader Todd Prichard (HD-52), state Senator Claire Celsi (SD-21), and Senate Minority Leader Janet Petersen (SD-18).

Last month, NARAL and Public Policy Polling released a new survey which finds that a large majority (70%) of Iowa voters believe that abortion should be legal, and that the government should not prevent a woman from making that decision for herself. Just 14% say they would only consider voting for a candidate who supports banning abortion in the November election.

For over 50 years, NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates and chapters have fought to protect and advance reproductive freedom—including access to abortion, contraception, and paid family leave—for every body. NARAL is powered by its more than 2.5 million members from every state and congressional district in the country, representing the 7 in 10 Americans who believe every person should have the freedom to make the best decision for themselves about if, when, and how to raise a family.
