Yesterday, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed into law an extreme measure that will force women to undergo a forced and medically unnecessary 24-hour delay prior to receiving abortion care.
Planned Parenthood and the ACLU of Iowa have filed a lawsuit against the legislation and requested that Johnson County District Judge Mitchell Turner issue a temporary injunction to prevent the law from going into effect while awaiting a ruling.
Governor Reynolds signed the law on the same day that Iowa reported a spike of nearly 300 COVID-19 cases in 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases in the state to over 28,000. More than 700 Iowans have lost their lives to COVID-19 since the pandemic began.
On the same day Governor Reynolds signed into law yet another bill rolling back access to abortion in Iowa, the Supreme Court narrowly struck down a restrictive law in Louisiana designed to shut down abortion clinics.
NARAL Pro-Choice America National Communications Director Kristin Ford released the following statement:
“It seems a bit ironic that Governor Reynolds signed into law a medically unnecessary restriction on abortion access on the very same day that the Supreme Court struck down another medically unnecessary restriction on abortion as unconstitutional. This bill represents yet another attempt by extreme anti-choice lawmakers to chip away at reproductive freedom via an endless parade of politically motivated roadblocks to abortion care.
The right to abortion is not a real right if you cannot access care. All this law does is create an additional barrier for those seeking to exercise their constitutionally-enshrined freedom to make their own decisions about if, when, and how to raise a family. By delaying access to time-sensitive and essential abortion care, this law will jeopardize the health and economic security of pregnant people and their families. These ideologically motivated restrictions exacerbate systemic inequities that have only grown more stark during the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to anti-choice politicians like Gov. Reynolds, who time and again put their ideology over our collective health and well-being in order to advance their agenda of controlling women and banning abortion.”
