NARAL Pro-Choice Iowa Opposes Proposed Anti-Choice Constitutional Amendment at Public Hearing
DES MOINES — Today, Tuesday, February 25th at 6:00pm CST, the Iowa House of Representatives will hold a public hearing on HJR2004, an extreme anti-choice amendment to the state constitution that would undermine reproductive freedom by nullifying a 2018 Iowa Supreme Court decision which found that women have a fundamental right to access abortion in Iowa. This public hearing is the last step before the bill heads to the House floor for a full vote.
NARAL Pro-Choice Iowa members and other Iowans concerned about safeguarding reproductive freedom are expected to attend the hearing in protest and speak out against the proposed amendment.
Ahead of Tuesday’s hearing, NARAL Pro-Choice America National Communications Director Kristin Ford released the following statement:
“Anti-choice Republicans in Iowa want to steamroll Iowans with their extreme and unpopular agenda, attempting to eliminate access to abortion by changing the state constitution. Iowans overwhelmingly support protecting the right to access abortion and believe that politicians have no place interfering in personal decisions best left to a woman with the support of those she loves and trusts. NARAL Iowa members will continue to hold politicians accountable for attacking our fundamental freedoms.”
Reproductive freedom remains a top issue for Iowans: When researching presidential candidates, “abortion” was among the top two most-searched issues in Iowa in the week leading up to the presidential caucuses. NARAL Pro-Choice America has thousands of members in the state and hundreds committed to caucus for reproductive freedom, representing 66 out of Iowa’s 99 counties.
In 2019, NARAL held Reproductive Freedom Town Halls in Iowa with leading Democratic presidential candidates Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Bernie Sanders, and Mayor Pete Buttigieg, along with former candidates Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator Kamala Harris, Secretary Julian Castro, Congressman Tim Ryan, and Governor Jay Inslee.
