Reps. Blum, Young and other GOP Leaders Push Abortion Ban Despite Devastating Consequences for Iowa Families

In response to Reps. Blum, King, Young, and Republicans in the House of Representatives passing a 20-week ban on abortion, Cari Sagar, NARAL Iowa State Director, released the following statement:

“Of all the things Republican leaders should be focusing on, including tragedies in Las Vegas and Puerto Rico, they have instead decided to make attacking women’s rights their top priority. After failing at their latest attempt to take away our healthcare, the Republican Party is now trying to ban abortion in a craven ploy to shore up their political base. Our country faces so many problems right now; politicians should focus on addressing these issues instead of manufacturing problems that clearly are not the priorities of hard-working Iowa families. Reps. Blum and Young have no business deciding if, when, and how Iowa women should start and grow their family. Abortions after twenty weeks of pregnancy are incredibly rare and often medically complex. Women and families in these difficult situations deserve safe and comprehensive care, not one-size-fits-all judgments from anti-choice politicians. NARAL Iowa will continue working to advance the reproductive freedom of women all across our state, and will hold accountable politicians like Reps. Blum and Young who undermine our constitutionally protected right to access basic reproductive healthcare.”

Here are all the anti-choice Republicans from Iowa who voted to restrict reproductive freedom today:

  • Rep. Rod Blum
  • Rep. Steve King
  • Rep. David Young

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
